American Institute for Creative Living a not-for-profit (501(c)(3), organization incorporated in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, began operations in 1973. It is governed by a Board of Trustees. The institute, over the years, has had satellites in Brooklyn, Queens and the above states with its main office building continually operating at 2295 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island, New York 10314; (718) 698-0300 on a 24/7 basis.

American Institute for Creative Living, in its history, has been engaged in a wide range of public services.but has been providing low cost counseling services and free related projects continually. For about a quarter century, it was affiliated with National Program on Non-Collegiate Sponsored Instruction,NPONSI, (New York State Education Department) whereby it offered about 80 credits both graduate and undergraduate levels in the field of counseling. Most of these twenty courses were offered for ten years on SI Community TV. Subsequently, the program was moved to affiliation with Sofia University online where previously AICL has partnered with Excelsior College. For about ten years, AICL operated an art gallery and explored the interface between art and psychotherapy.

American Institute is part of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), Princeton and has been administering CLEP Exams for over a quarter century. For an even longer time, the institute has been approved by the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (OASAS) to offer the educational components of its various state credentials.
